A group 13 SriLankan Airlines award-winning athletes were among the team of 100 that represented Sri Lanka in the 18th Asian Masters Athletics Championship held at Kithakami, Japan with the participation of over 18 countries.
Out of 13 athletes, veterans Lanil Kulathunga, Deepthi Fernando, Susantha Mawela and Gerald Gunasekara made it to the top eight of their respective events; javelin throw, high jump and 5,000m race walk, which won them diploma certificates for their participation.
Mawela, a winner of the Airlines’ colours this year, has been taking part in the Asian Masters Athletics Championships since 2006 and has won a total of one Gold medal and three Silver medals. He also ranked ninth in High Jump at the World Masters Athletic Championship held in Brazil 2012.
Gunasekara on the other hand has been the Silver medallist in the 5,000m race walk in the Athletics Championship held in Chiang Mai in 2008.
While Kulathunge had won a Bronze medal in the javelin throw event in a previous championship, Fernando has won two Gold medals in the Javelin Throw event at the 16th and 17th Asian Masters Athletics Championships held in Malaysia and Chinese Taipei, respectively.
