Sajith Sankalpa and Nilaksha Kariyawasam shared seven wickets between them and Proboda Madushanka’s 44 guided the chase as St. Aloysius’ College Galle stunned the star-studded Trinity College in the Schools U19 Singer Cup T20 tournament semi final.
The U19 schools division II side St. Aloysius’, playing against the third Goliath inside a week showed maturity far beyond their age once again. They defeated another star studded and batting heavy Isipathana College and S. Thomas’ College in the pre-quarter final and quarter final respectively.
Chasing a modest 108 for victory the lads from Galle needed a good platform and they got it through Madushanka and Kariyawasam, who laid a solid foundation of 44 runs in 8.2 overs. The sedate Kariyawasam was the first to go for 19.
Madushanka scored a 42 ball 44 with 4 fours before he was caught and bowled by Hasitha Boyagoda with the score on 79 in the 15th over. Ashane Bandara and N. Nirmal took St. Aloysius’ over the finish line with six balls to spare after a 30-run partnership.
Earlier on in the Trinity innings, Sankalpa picked up the wickets of dangerous batsmen, Nushan Weerasinghe and Dilan Jayalath for 0 and 14 respectively while Kariyawasam bagged the wickets of Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan (11), Naveen Ekanayake (4) and Yasaran Pitiwala (5).
Trinity were 54 for 6 in 10 overs before captain Raveen Sayer (25) and Sachira Gaminda (21) put on a 29 run partnership but both fell in quick succession as the lower order showed little resistance.
