St. Peter’s College beat Trinity College 38-24 in the second quarterfinal encounter of the Milo President’s Trophy knockout competition, which was played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The Peterites scored their points through six tries and four conversions while Trinity replied through four tries and two conversions. At halftime Trinity led 24-21.

The Peterites kicked off the game with confidence when skipper Diyath Fernando drew first blood early in the fifth minute of the game. Centre Theekshana Dissanayake added the extra two points to take a 7-0 lead. Trinity hit back soon through Centre Warren Weerakoon. Theekshana Dissanayake, who had a grand game, scored and converted to give his team a 14-5 lead.

Trinity hit back through Shamal Abeyratne with Bandaranayake adding the extra two points. The lads from Bambalapitiya scored through the explosive Jason Karunathilake, who caught the Trinity line on the blind side to touch down. Theekshana added the extra two points. Weerakoon scored back-to-back tries to give Trinity a 24-21 lead at halftime.

After the turnaround the Peterites scored through skipper Diyath Fernando, who touched down for his second try and Faiz Abdullah, whose try gave St. Peter’s a 33-24 lead. Trinity kept on attacking the Peterites’ territory but lacked the finishing touches and they were a yard slower to the loose ball.

In the meantime, Trinity scored a try through a forwards rush which was disallowed by the referee. A few minutes later Karunathilake scored his second try to seal the game 38-24 and book his team a place in the semifinals. Dinka Peries was the referee for the game.



Joes book semifinal berth

St. Joseph’s College 43 points

Wesley College 29 points

The Joes settled well in the latter half of their game against Wesley College to beat them 43-29 to book a semifinal berth against Dharmaraja College, who received a walkover from Royal College. The Joes scored their points through six tries, five conversions and one penalty while their opponents scored five tries and two conversions. Wesley started off well and led 24-21 towards halftime. But in the second half the Joes hit back strongly through their skipper Sachith Silva, Chathura Seneviratne and Gemunu Chethiya. Seneviratne earned the Joes a lot of territory. Irshard Cader was the game’s referee.

 

Isipathana scrapes through

  • Isipathana College - 29 points

  • St. Anthony’s College - 28 points

 

Defending Milo knockout rugby champions Isipathana College needed to fire on all cylinders in order to beat St. Anthony’s College Katugastota by 29 points (5 tries, 2 conversions) to 28 points (3 tries, 2 conversions, 2 penalties, 1 drop goal) in the fourth quarterfinal of the Milo Knockout rugby competition 2017 encounter which was worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

At halftime the Antonians led 15-12.

The Antonians were leading for most of the game going into the last 10 minutes of the match up 28-24. Isipathana, who never gave up, scored their winning try through Anjana Kulasekera with five minutes to go for the final whistle. The game was refereed by Rohan Fernando.  

The first semifinal will be played between St. Joseph’s College and Dharmaraja College (17 July) while the second semifinal will be contested between St. Peter’s College and defending champions Isipathana (18 July).
