Stallions conduct Sabaragamuwa province Inter Club Seven’s tournament

Following the successfully conducted Under 19 tournament, the Sabaragamuwa Province Rugby Union together with the backing of one of the founding franchises of the Carlton Rugby Sevens, the Sabaragamuwa Stallions will be hosting a Provincial Inter Club Sevens Tournament on Sunday 2 March 2014. With 12 teams participating, the tournament will be held at the historical Thalduwa Kelani Valley Ground, which was established in 1884 and has previously been used for horse racing and even witnessed elephant races when it was administered by Europeans. The teams will be vying for Cup, Plate and Bowl honours on the day and entry to witness the games will be free to the public. The aim for the Provincial Rugby Union in conducting and the Stallions franchise in supporting these tournaments is to discover, champion and deliver talented local rugby players on to a higher stage. Graduates from Sabaragamuwa’s rugby scene have included a captain of CR & FC (Anurada Dharmathilaka), BuddhithaThalagampala who has made appearances for both Kandy and CR & FC, M.A.R. Silva who played for the 2014 Dialog Rugby League Champions, Navy, and several other players who have gone on to represent both men’s and women’s national sides. Off the pitch the district also fosters the development of officials and including coaches, managers and even Sri Lanka’s first ever female referee. Sabaragamuwa Stallions is directed by NSports which is a national franchise of Sri Lanka’s elite Rugby 7s competition, The Carlton Rugby 7s. The team emerged as champions of the 2013 Colombo leg of the tournament. The franchise is owned by Royal Ceramics PLC.
