The sponsorship cheque was handed over to Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekara and S. Thomas’ College Warden Prof. Indra de Soysa, by Standard Chartered Consumer Banking Head Sanjay Wijemanne, recently at the Royal College Auditorium.

The bank extends this sponsorship to the island’s oldest inter-school cricket ‘big match’ to support the values of good sportsmanship.

Consumer Banking Head Sanjay Wijemanne, speaking of the encounter said: “There is so much enthusiasm and publicity around the ‘Battle of the Blues’ and we do want to reiterate that as much as it is about winning and losing it is also, very importantly, about ‘how you played the game’.

“There are values and inspiration we can draw from the sport. We hope that our association with the oldest of schoolboy cricket encounters will further these ideals, and help grow responsible citizens in years to come.”

Standard Chartered’s support of sport extends to supporting tennis, football and golf, and is a reiteration of the bank’s brand promise of ‘Here for good’.
