Standard Chartered partners 135th Royal-Thomian cricket encounter

Standard Chartered will once again partner the annual Royal-Thomian cricket encounter as its official banker for the third consecutive year. Cricket fever once more has schoolboys and old boys in its grip this March as “the big match” becomes a preoccupation. The bank in reiteration of its community engagement agenda extends this sponsorship to the island’s oldest inter-school cricket encounter in support of the values of good sportsmanship and teamwork. Standard Chartered Head of Consumer Banking Sanjay Wijemanne, speaking of the annual cricket encounter said: “The big matches are no longer just for schoolboys as in recent years these events have drawn old boys and members of the general public to participate in the spirit of the cricket match. We are pleased to be associated with this big match for the third consecutive year and engendering values and inspiration associated with sportsmanship.” Standard Chartered’s Consuming Banking team including Sanjay Wijemanne, handed over the sponsorship cheque to the Principal Royal College Upali Gunasekara and the Warden of S. Thomas’ College Prof. Indra de Soysa at a simple ceremony on 6 March 2014 at the Sports Ministry Auditorium in Colombo. Standard Chartered’s support of sport extends to supporting the development of the game of golf in Sri Lanka with the successful conclusion recently of the Standard Chartered Open 2014, and soccer skills among inner city youth with Standard Chartered’s “Go Forward” initiative embarked on by the bank in partnership with Liverpool Football Club (LFC). Standard Chartered have sponsored LFC since July 2010. Since becoming sponsors, the bank has teamed up with LFC to raise awareness and funds for avoidable blindness and visual impairment, and awareness of HIV, in addition to its collaboration on the Go Forward initiative.
