  Hemas Hospitals-Thalawathugoda expanded its healthcare facilities further by launching a new Sports Medicine Unit recently. It was opened in a ceremony graced by distinguished invitees including the well-known sports personalities, Damayanthi Darsha and Shriyani Kulawansa, who made Sri Lanka proud in international athletics. Sports medicine is the speciality in medicine that deals with physical fitness as well as treatment and prevention of injuries caused due to sports and exercise. Understanding its responsibilities in fulfilling the healthcare needs of its communities, Hemas Hospitals-Thalawathugoda has initiated to have a dedicated unit for sports medicine with a well-trained and qualified team of sport physicians, physiotherapists, personal trainers and masseurs. This is a landmark achievement for the whole healthcare industry in Sri Lanka as it is the first time that a unit of this nature has been set up by a Sri Lankan hospital to provide comprehensive treatment for a wide variety of sports related medical complications and issues. A distinguished invitee for the opening ceremony, Sport Medicine and Sport Injury Management Specialist Dr. Dhammika Senanayake – who is also a partner for the Sports Medicine Unit at Hemas Hospital-Thalawathugoda, sharing his thoughts about the new unit said: “The unit has plans to provide a wide range of services to fulfil the requirements of patients ranging from basic back and neck injuries to rehabilitation following a stroke, or degeneration due to auto-immune diseases. Our exercise-oriented rehabilitation backed by the latest techniques in the field will allow patients to restore maximum movement and functional ability fast.” This unit will be open for patients throughout the week for seven days and will provide comprehensive healthcare facilities including injury treatment, exercise prescription, personal training, fitness assessment, sports massages to routine physiotherapy and medical assessment for school athletes.
