Officials of the Sri Lanka Netball Federation should stop squabbling amongst themselves and promote netball in the island, Southern Province Sports Minister Weerasumana Weerasinghe said at the ceremonial opening of the Unity Challenge Trophy 2015 netball tournament.

The competition, organised by the Unity Sports Club of Matara, sought to select a 30-member junior district netball pool.

“Netball is a sport at which Sri Lanka has the potential to win medals if it is promoted as it should be. There are many talented players in rural villages that need to be noticed and given an opportunity and proper training who can reach a national level,” said Weerasinghe.

“Sri Lankan-born netball coaches have taken up assignments abroad and have produced remarkable results. I hope that the other provinces will take note of Unity Sports Club’s vision and promote netball throughout the island to bring glory to Sri Lanka.”
