Suriya Resorts, Waikkal wins annual Negombo Inter-Hotels Sixes

New comer, Suriya Resort, Waikkal, emerged as the new winner of the Annual Negombo Inter-Hotels Cricket “Sixes” 2016, beating Jetwing Blue, Negombo in the Final, at the Sir Albert F Peiris Sports Complex, Wennappuwa on Thursday, 14th July.

The 40th  edition of this colorful  event, was organised by the Negombo Hoteliers Association   (tournament inaugurated in 1975)   22 mens teams and 06 womens teams participated.

In the inaugural Womens “Sixes”, Jetwing Beach took the title, beating Golden Sun Beach Hotel, Negombo.

The Mens Final played in the fading light, was stretched, as it got dragged on to the wicket keepers contest when  the match ended in a “tie” .

The Suriya Resort wicket keeper, N. Nalinda bowled a splendid over, giving away only 07 runs in 05 balls which they achieved in one ball, as Jetwing Blue Captain, Nishantha Fernando, who was the W/K bowled a no-ball, hit for a six.

Mens Match results from QF’s : Camelot Beach Hotel  (2015 winner) 58/0 (4.0) beat Paradise Beach Hotel  54/1 (4.0) ;  Suriya Resort  46/3  (4.0) beat Goldi Sands  28/1 (4.0);  Jetwing Sea 48/4 (4.0) beat Heritance Negombo  33/1 (4.0); Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions 35/1  (4.0) lost to   beat Jetwing Blue  40/1 (3.3)

Semi Finals : Suriya Resort - 42/5 (4.0)  beat Camelot Beach 30/5 (4.0);  Jetwing Blue  40/1  (4.0) beat Jetwing Sea 30/2  (4.0)

Final :  Suriya Resort 51/1  (4.1) (  Niroshan Madusanka  35, N. Oshan 01/01) beat Jetwing Blue  48/3  (5.0) ( N. Fernando 15,   N. Nalin 21 not out,  Ishan Silva  1/2)  (including the two W/K’s overs)

Special Awards:  Best Fielder and Best Bowler :  Ishan Silva from Suriya Resort;  Best Batsman & Man of the tournament: Nishantha Fernando from Jetwing Blue;  Man of the Final : Niroshan Madusanka from Suriya Resort.

Womens Final :  Jetwing Beach 87/1 (5.0)  (Chamathka Wijesinghe 15 not out Shanika Perera 26 not out,  Judi Peiris 1/20) beat Golden Sun Beach Hotel  34/5 (5.0)  (Chamathka Wijesinghe 1/6, Shanika Perera 0/1,  Nuwanthi Silva 1/6,  Dimaya Hapuarachchi 1/10)

Special Awards :  Best Fielder & Best Bowler;  Chamathka Wijesinghe from Jetwing Beach ;  Best Batter :  Rashmi Sanjeevi from Golden Sun;  Woman of the Final :  Shanika Perera from Jetwing Beach ;  Woman of the Tournament :  Dimaya Hapuarachchi from Jetwing Beach.

Minister of Sports, Dayasiri Jayasekera was the Chief Guest at the awards; others present were NHA Past President P. Gomez, Club Hotel Dolphin GM Daniel Ludwig, Waikkal, NHA Past President Merrill Kuruppu,   Ranweli Holiday Resort  GM Ivan Dassanayake & Goldi Sands MD Dinesh Suriyasena, and Suriya Resort staff.

Gamini Keerthisinghe (Resident Manager, Club Palm Bay, Marawila) whilst delivering  the vote of thanks, presented a memento to the Minister.
