Travel Trade Sports Club Badminton Championships on 4 Sept.

The 21st Travel Trade Sports Club Badminton Championships 2016, sponsored by Serendib Leisure Hotels for the sixth year, will take place on 4 September at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Sports Stadium in Mount Lavinia, commencing at 9.00 a.m. 

For the first time the tournament will be conducted on an open team championship basis with a tie  consisting of one men’s  singles, one men’s  doubles, one women’s singles, one women’s doubles and one mixed doubles match.  

Additionally, in the veterans tournament, with a new format for the men’s over-40 and women ‘s over-35 brackets being played on a team championship basis , a tie consists of one men’s singles, one men’s doubles and one  mixed doubles match.

Presently, the following 20 teams have confirmed their participation: SriLankan Airlines, Serendib Leisure Management, Habarana Village, Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Gateway Airport Garden, Seeduwa, Walkers Tours  Leisure Inbound, Metro Travels, Aitken Spence Travels, The Kingsbury, Jetwing Travels, Citrus Waskaduwa, Mermaid Hotel, Kalutara and Green Holidays (all participating in the Open and Veterans categories), Paradise Beach Hotel, Negombo, Viluxur Holidays, Luxe Asia, Traveler Global, Holiday Plan and Diethlm Travels (all participating in the Open category only).   

In the previous tournament, held on 17 May 2015 at the same venue, Hotel Topaz Kandy from the McLarens Group won the Men’s Open category by beating Citrus Waskaduwa and they went on to lift the women’s tournament title after beating Serendib Leisure. SriLankan Airlines won the men’s veterans tournament beating Kingsbury.

Hotel Topaz, Kandy will be a notable absentee this year.
