A triangular cricket tournament was jointly organised by the Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka in Chennai with the participation of Bank of Ceylon Chennai and SriLankan Airlines Chennai on 30 July at the Madras Christian College School Ground in Chennai along with staff and family members of home-based and locally-recruited staff.
In his welcome speech, the event’s Chief Guest Deputy High Commissioner V. Krishnamoorthy highlighted the history of the M.J. Gopalan Trophy, which was an annual first-class cricket competition played between Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and Tamil Nadu (then Madras) from 1952-1953 and 2007-2008 stating that the idea of the competition came about with the commencement of a silver jubilee fund in 1952 to celebrate M.J. Gopalan’s 25 years as a cricket and hockey player.
Further, he invited SriLankan Airlines and Bank of Ceylon to establish their counters in accordance with the vision of Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake in the existing pavilions at the chancery premises of the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission.
