Trinity College, Kandy displayed champagne rugby to beat St Joseph’s College 22-12 and secure the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Sevens 2017, which was worked off at the racecourse rugby grounds yesterday.
Defending champions Science College, who showed a lot of promise on day one, were beaten 22-17 by St. Joseph’s College in one of the semifinal encounters. Trinity College, who looked average on day one, saved the best for the last day when they outclassed Piliyandala Central 33-17 before beating D.S. Senanayake 22-5 in the other semifinal.
Sri Lanka youth player Warren Weerakoon, fresh off the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas, was in cracking form, winning the Player of the Tournament award. Three Kandy schools - Trinity, St. Anthony’s and Vidyartha - secured the Cup, Plate and Bowl respectively while Richmond from Galle accounted for the Shield.
Science beat Wesley 34-5, St. Joseph’s beat Royal 12-5, Trinity beat Piliyandala Central 33-17 and D.S. Senanayake beat St. Anthony’s 24-0.
