Trinity Lions for Ryan, Shums and Leshan

By Shamseer Jaleel Trinity College recently conferred the Trinity Lion honour on three outstanding students who have excelled in boxing, rugby and cadetting. Shums Ziyard A third year player, Shums Ziyard participated in the LV Jayaweera boxing meet 2010, winning the majority of his games. He also became All Island 3rd at the Cadet Boxing Meet in 2010, 3rd at the All Island T.B. Jayah Memorial Boxing Meet in 2012 and was placed 2nd in the All Island Central Province Open Boxing Meet in 2012. Shums stamped his class by becoming 3rd at the Junior National Meet in 2012, 2nd and Best Loser at the Youth Boxing Meet in 2012. He continued his good form by becoming 3rd at the All Island Central Province Open meet in 2013 and Champion at the T.B. Jayah Memorial Boxing Meet in the same year. Shums was awarded Colours in 2012 and re-awarded in the following year. His latest achievement was Sri Lanka Colours in boxing, which enabled him to get his hands on the most prestigious award for any Trinitian during their school career, a Lion in boxing. Ryan Weerakoon Ryan, a well-known student in the field of rugby football, represented Trinity as a scrum half under Tharinda Ratwatte this year. He beat Royalist A.P. Rupasinghe by technical knockout in the Royal vs Trinity dual meet which marked the 100th year of boxing for both schools and retained the trophy for Trinity He was placed 1st in the Junior National meet held in 2013 by winning by four technical knockout outs. Ryan rewrote history by becoming the first boxer to win a national tournament as a novice. Ryan was awarded with Sri Lanka Colours for the above mentioned excellent performances and received his boxing Lion this month. Leshan Abeyratne Leshan Abeyratne was awarded with a Lion for cadetting at the assembly recently at the Trinity College Hall. He was awarded as Best Athlete Cadet in 2012. This year he bagged two more awards. He won the Best Shot Cadet and Best All Round Cadet. This year he commanded the band at the 66th Independence celebration held at Bogambara. He was promoted to the post of Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the 23rd Battalion and was Parade Commander of the 23rd and 24th Battalions as Warrant Officer 1 Regimental Sergeant Major 2014 at the battalion platoon camp held at Rantambe.
