Trinity College Kandy started their 2014/2015 rugby season with a high-scoring 50 points (8 tries, 5 conversions) to 37 points (5 tries, 3 conversions, 1 penalty, 1 drop goal) win over Dharmaraja College at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekelle yesterday.
At halftime Trinity led 24-20. Trinity started off well with an attacking approach but their defence was all over the place. Trinity centre Sachintha Dissanayake was outstanding in attack as well as mdefence. He split the Rajans’ defence on a number of occasions.
He was rock solid at the back, giving some fine cover tackles which kept the Rajans’ three quarters without running at will. Trinity Number 8 Rukshan Dhammapala along with their skipper Isuru Rangala both were outstanding. The Rajans for their part played well in patches. In the decision-making department, the Rajans were several seconds faster than their opponents, not allowing the Trinity outfit to settle.
In total there were 13 tries scored by both teams. Rajans opened scoring in the seventh minute through a neat drop-goal from fullback Weerasekera. But Trinity hit back soon through a try from fullback Saranga Gunatilake. Five minutes later centre Sachithra Dissanyake produced a superb solo run to touch down under the posts. Saranga added the extra two points to take a 12-3 lead.
The Rajans reduced the lead through a 35-meter penalty by Weerasekera. Then Trinity scored two quick tries through fly-half T. Perera and scrum-half Boyagoda. The Rajans too scored two tries before lemons through fly-half C. Perera and Flanker Manushka Kumara. Lemons were taken with Trinity leading 24-20.
After the turnaround, Trinity scored through Ryan Weerakoon, Ruckshan Dhammpala and Saranga Gunatilake (2). For Dharmaraja, tries were scored through Udangamuwa (2) and Malinga. Weerasekera was on target with one conversion. The referee for the game was Dharmapala Nimal. Trinity won the Under 16 encounter 21-5. Trinity will next lock horns with St. Antony’s College Katugastota on 29 March at Nittawela.
