Spectators will be able to witness club rugby at its best when the unbeaten league champions Navy Sports Club, captained by Yoshitha Rajapaksa, lock horns with the high-riding Kandy Sports Club, led by Sean Wijesinghe, at Welisara on 22 November. Kandy SC secured a one-point win over Havies following a late second half burst. But going by their record at Welisara, Navy hold the edge having walked away winners several times during the last couple of years. This encounter will be controlled by an overseas referee. Navy boast some outstanding names such as Srinath Sooriyabandara, Bilal Hassen, Achala Perera and Eranga Swarnathilake. Meanwhile, the up-country outfit has nearly the entire Sri Lanka national three-quarter line with Gayan Weeraratne, Fazil Marija and Pradeep Liyanage occupying key spots in the side. They also hold two high-calibre wingers in Anurudha Wilwara and Lavanga Perera. Nigel Ratwatte is the side’s fullback. They also possess Kenyan Sevens star Oscar Ouma, who can give strength to the forwards and also play as a centre three-quarter. A foreign referee will also handle the CH&FC-Havelocks SC encounter at Havelock Park on the following day.
