Underprepared Sri Lanka Sevens team end at No. 4 in Borneo

The tournament consisted of six men’s teams and eight women’s teams in the three-day event. Hong Kong stamped their class to win the tournament with a run-away 24/0 win over Tonga in the one-sided final encounter. PNG who beat Sri Lanka 33/7 claimed the number three position. On the opening day Sri Lanka beat China (40/0), Singapore (47/0) and lost to PNG (12/29), Hong Kong (38/0) and Tonga (31/5).Playing in the Cup semi final Sri Lanka lost to a tougher Tongan outfit 26/17. In the end after getting relegated to the Plate final, Sri Lanka lost to PNG 7/33 to end at the No. 4 position out of the six teams in the competition. Fazil Marija led the Sevens team, who were ahead of only lowly-placed China and Singapore. China beat Singapore 31/7 to secure the No. 5 position. This tournament, which was caught in between the Inter Club 15-a-side tournament, had only two training sessions which was on the card for more than three months by the ARFU (Asian Rugby Football Union). The country witnessed an underprepared team sent by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) along with a club assistant coach as the head coach of the National Team.
