England’s stunning upset win over South Africa means Australia face the daunting prospect of taking on the Springboks at the Wellington Sevens on Saturday.
Australia looked to have avoided a quarter-final date with the red-hot South Africans after they topped Pool D thanks to a late win over Samoa.
Australia fought back from 12-5 down against the Samoans to win their final pool match 15-12, their third victory from as many games.
But England’s shock win means South Africa finished second in Pool A, setting up a Cup quarter-final with the Aussies.
South Africa are this weekend chasing their third-straight tournament win after claiming the titles in Port Elizabeth and Las Vegas.
They looked in ominous form in their first two matches on Friday, but were completely outclassed by England 19-5.
Australia looked to be in trouble against Samoa when they fell behind thanks to a brilliant solo effort from Alatasi Tuau early in the second half.
But a sensational 100m try from substitute Shannon Walker, converted by Greg Jeloudev, saw the Aussies draw level before Cameron Clark slotted a penalty goal on full-time.
Australia’s most dominant performance of the day came against Kenya, who were completely outclassed in the slippery afternoon conditions.
Alan Fa’alava’au opened Australia’s account with a brilliant solo effort from long range, holding off a desperate chase from Kenya’s Collins Injera.
The biggest upset on the opening day came courtesy of Fiji, who stunned hosts New Zealand to finish top of Pool B.
