The third annual Sri Lanka Junior Match Play Championship for the Rukmini Kodagoda Trophy, sponsored by Perera & Sons Bakers Ltd., was successfully concluded with the finals of the four age group categories played at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, Ridgeways Golf Course.
The 15-year-old Vinod Weerasinghe played consistent golf throughout being the best qualifier with the lowest score in the pre-match play stage and then winning his matches comfortably. The Final was no exception with Vinod defeating T. Akash four and three, an emphatic margin of victory.
Vinod brushed aside the defending champ Prashan Peiris two up in the semifinal after easing past Vihan De Alwis six and five in the quarters of the Gold Division.
Previously, the runner-up Akash pulled off a surprise, clinching a nail-biting semifinal clash with the more fancied Januka Dilshan on the fourth sudden death hole, the 22nd.
Silver Division top seed Taniya Minel Balasuriya, romped home with a nine and seven victory in the final over HimalRandima to win the 12-14 year age category.
The Bronze Division produced a thriller as anticipated with Yanik Kumara holding his nerve to beat Nirekh Tejwani three and one in the Final.
