A set of youngsters from Sri Lanka and UK playing in the most junior U 12 category, including many debutantes got a wonderful international experience at a proper test venue, when a combined Moratuwa team (captained by Chrishen Warnasuriya, 8 years) hosted a visiting Surrey team at the P. Sara stadium recently.
The visitors made a powerfully driven 121 for 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, which was easily reached by the home lads losing only 1 wicket in just 12 overs; with a dashing unbeaten half-century from young Jayasundere (10 years) with several exquisitely timed cuts and pulls square of the wicket, which was a pleasure to watch for any cricket loving eye. Junior bowled 3 overs of his left arm Chinaman taking 2 wickets for 14 odd runs, which could’ve very well been a 5 wicket haul, if not for 2 ‘sitters’ that were put down, one return catch by himself, the other grounded at mid on and an easy stumping that missed the wicket keeper.
The youngsters would’ve definitely gained much by this rich interaction at such a young age, many congratulations to coaches Kushan Wijewickrama and NIC De Silva of Champs Cricket Academy for organising such events and also young Thomian Ryan Edwards of Butterfly Vacations for many of these pictures.
