Sydney: Stanislas Wawrinka needed only six points and three minutes to dispatch Lleyton Hewitt and clinch the match to help Switzerland win its Davis Cup tie against Australia by a 3-2 score line.

Forced to return to Royal Sydney Golf Club with the tie stranded at two rubbers all and Wawrinka on the brink of victory at 5-3, a hobbling Hewitt moved to 30-0 before spraying two forehand errors either side of two double faults.

Switzerland’s tiny squad, led by Roger Federer, celebrated as the Australians trudged off court after the 4-6 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-3 result.

Hewitt is understood to have had several painkilling injections over the past 36 hours and reappeared today with his right knee bandaged.

The result means Australia will remain in zonal competition in the Asia-Oceania league while Switzerland returns to the elite world group.
