Mark Webber said on Thursday he expected his contract extension with Red Bull to be completed in the very near future.
But the Australian added that he did not consider it to be a “formality.”
Asked about his future contract, he said: “Not far away - decisions will be made shortly so it should be pretty close to doing something.”
He confirmed he had met Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz during Formula One’s enforced summer break to discuss the future and had then held further talks with team chief Christian Horner.
He said it would not be fair to consider a new contract to be a formality.
“That would be cheeky of me. My decision has to be taken into account although the team’s decision is pretty clear. Obviously Dietrich has been great, as have all the boys and everyone at the team. All will become clear shortly,” he said.
Webber has experienced a strained relationship with his team-mate and world champion Sebastian Vettel at times in recent years, but has proved to be a strong and brave racing driver.
