Wesley College will vie for their second successive trophy when they play at the Blue and Gold Hockey 7s tournament next week, organised by the Royal College Hockey Club.
More than 50 boys’ and girls’ schools across the country, including Jaffna, will take part in this year’s tournament - organised for the 12th consecutive year scheduled - on 11 and 12 October at the Royal College grounds.
In the girls’ category, Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nawala will look to defend their title in the tournament, which will feature around 130 games over two days. The main matches, including the Cup Finals, will be telecast live in CSN.
The tournament is sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Plc and co-sponsored by ESOFT Metro Campus. Singer Sri Lanka Plc Group CEO Asoka Pieris will be the chief guest for the finals and awards ceremony.
The annual all-island event is organised mainly to help develop the talent of school hockey players and improve the overall standards of the game.
Teams will compete in the Cup, bowl and Plate championships in the both boys’ and girls’ categories. Hosts Royal have emerged champions thrice, the highest number of wins by a boys’ team, while Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy has won the title five times in the history of the tournament.
