The junior under 9, 10, 11 and 12 (seven-a-side tag rugby) and under 14 and 16 tackle rugby carnival was a great success.
It was staged at Havelock Park on a grand scale in November and witnessed by a large gathering of parents and rugby fans.
According to SLRFU Western Province Rugby Deve1opment Chairman Shamrath Fernando, this rugby development was restarted after a lapse of two years and the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) employed three District Development officers headed Fernando under the instructions of SLRFU Rugby Development Chairman Gr. Capt. Nalin de Silva and WPRFU President Rizly Illyas.
After an impressive speech by Gr. Capt. de Silva, certificates and rugby balls were awarded to all participating teams. A total of 400 players from 40 teams under the category of age under 9, 10, 11 and 12 tag and tackling rugby participated while 500 players from 50 teams under the age category of under 14 and 16 tackling rugby participated.
Shamrath further said that this mini rugby carnival was held to see the talent and progress of the development now and in future.
The carnival was organised by the WPRFU and the Chief Guest was Gr. Capt. de Silva.
