The Western Warriors rugby team was launched at an event held at Galle face Hotel on the 25 October. They will be participating in the much anticipated Carlton Super Sevens Rugby Tournament to be held from the 29 October to 6 November.
The Western Warriors team is owned by Taprobane Holdings (Pvt) Ltd., and is captained by Dushanth Lewke. The team consists of M. Faleel, K. Amarasinghe, S. Dias, D. De Zoyza, R. Senevirathne, I. Udayakumar, R. Meedeen, D. Warnakulasooriya, R. Weerakoon, V. Jayasinghe, N. Tuitawake, N. Roko, A. Walker and coached by P. Fernandes and Assisted by L. De Silva. The team is managed by S. W. Chang.
Speaking at the event team owner Ajith Devasurendra said: “We are excited to field an experienced side that I am sure will perform well at this tournament. We believe that sports uplifts leadership and teamwork across the country thus paving the way to build a better society. The Carlton Sevens is a great initiative to improve the standard of seven’s rugby in Sri Lanka and would hopefully be a regular feature in the years to come”
Also speaking at the event, Team Manager S.W. Chang said: “The Carlton Super Sevens is a good concept and a great opportunity for the boys to show their professionalism. They have been training hard and we look forward to some very good Rugby in the days to come. We are also thankful for the support we have received from our sponsors.”
The Western Warriors are powered by Alpha, Entrust, Hiru and Sun FM, LOLC, NSB, PC House, Sharp and Taprobane.
The Carlton Super Sevens league is owned by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union and Carlton Sports Entertainment.
It consists of 10 teams, each representing the nine provinces in Sri Lanka including and one which is a special place of interest. The tournament will not only host live action packed rugby but will include Team cheerleaders, live DJ hype, food and beer festivals and a Carlton Super Sevens musical show.
