Wijesinghe appointed Sri Lankan rugby trainer

Sean Wijesinghe Former Trinity College, Kandy and former Sri Lanka fifteens skipper Sean Wijesinghe will be the national rugby team’s physical trainer for their Asian Four Nations tournament which will take place in the Philippines early next month. Sean, who also led Kandy to three championships, played for Trinity in 2000. He played under the captaincy of David Luchow, and in the following year he was deputy to Thisal Jayawardena. He won his colours in rugby and basketball while at Trinity. Sean also captained the basketball team and the Under-15 cricket side. At the international level Sean represented the national rugby team against South Korea, Hong Kong and the Arabian Gulf and Chinese teams. He led the national rugby team at the Asian Five Nations where they finished in the top 5 in Colombo. During the series he injured his knee and was sidelined for more than a year. Speaking to Daily FT, Sean said: “I am very happy with the appointment and the confidence shown in me by the Sri Lanka rugby administrators. Physical fitness plays a major role in rugby and enables a player to perform at his or her peak without suffering any injuries.” He added that hosts the Philippines, Kazakhstan and Singapore were fielding expatriates. Having played over four months of club rugby the players will be at their peak. Training for the competition will commence on 15 April.(SJ)
