  • Wings for Life Selfie Run and race around Colombo’s Viharamahadevi Park at 4.30 p.m. with the Wings for Life World Run App

The Wings for Life World Run will begin simultaneously in 35 places around the world on May 3rd at 11 AM UTC (4.30 PM Sri Lanka time). The unique feature of the Wings for Life World Run is the Catcher Car, which acts as a “moving finish line”, pursuing and ultimately passing the runners during the race. This makes the race not only a competition between the raced and the Catcher Car, it also makes it the fairest race in the world. To train for the race, athletes have access to the Wings for Life World Run app, which has the Catcher Car attached to your smartphone. In addition, the app offers a “selfie run” function, allowing the user to participate in the official race as a “Selfie Runner” at the same time on their own track. The Wings for Life World Run app is available free for iOS in the App Store and for Android smartphones on Google Play. Registration for the Selfie Run is open until April 28th, 2015 and costs 15 euros. As with all proceeds from the official run, 100 percent of the fee will go to benefit the Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation. The Wings for Life World Run bring together runners from all over the world. In 33 countries - from Melbourne, Australia, Munich, Germany, Cape Town, South Africa to Brazil – participants will all start at the same time. In Sri Lanka, The Wings for Life Selfie Run will also begin on May 3rd, 4.30pm at the Viharamahadevi Park. The Catcher Car will set out to overtake the athletes 30 minutes after the runners begin and bring an end to their run. The runners’ goal is to be caught by the Catcher Car as late as possible and to become Global Champion. Anyone can join in, from casual athletes and wheelchair users to Olympic athletes. This year, runners who can’t start at one of the 35 official destinations have the opportunity to take part in the event with a Selfie Run”. Anyone who registers for the “Selfie Run” by April 28th can be part of the World Run via smartphone and app, with their own race number and position in the results list. Thanks to the live radio integrated into the app, participants will be kept up to date on events on race day around the world. The Wings for Life World Run app also offers a variety of training options. The exclusive Catcher Car function offers a new, unique training experience. It provides continuous updates on how close the Catcher Car is to the runner, thus spurring the runner on to peak performance.
