Young Athukorala does Sri Lanka proud

The Most Outstanding Sportsman at St. Peter’s College Colours Night 2014, Black Belt Karateka Randev N.A. Athukorala did Sri Lanka proud by fighting for the country and winning two Bronze medals in Kata and Kumitae events under 15 at the seventh World Men’s Karate Championships – Shitoryu Shikokaiunion staged in Teheran, Iran. The tournament was sponsored by the World Karate Federation (WKF) with 28 countries competing for the honours.

Young Athukorala is a fourth year member of the Sri Lanka Schools Karate Team under the Education Ministry and is a previous Silver medallion of Asia, at the Malaysian Milo Karate Championships and double Gold medal winner at the Nepal Karate Championships which was staged in Dhanghdi, Nepal. 

He is trained by 6th dan black belt Sensei D.M. Nimal and assisted by Sensei Asela of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Randev’s Manager is his father 3rd dan black belt Dr. Rohantha Athukorala. 

Commenting on his performance, Dr. Athukorala said: “Karate is not about winning, but once you reach black belt standard, perfecting the art and then applying it in other areas of life like studies and work.”

The Rector of St Peter is Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin who personally meets every student who represents the country at national level before departure.
