Young talent highlighted at Etisalat-NEGC Championships 2013

  • Amrith de Soysa and Dhanushi Senadhira crowned Club Champions
The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) Championship 2013, a board tournament open to all NEGC members in both Men’s and Women’s categories, recently concluded with Amrith de Soysa and Danushi Senadhira walking away as the respective Club Champions. Backed by the support of Etisalat Lanka – the first private organisation to partner with all four golf clubs in the country, the three day championship tournament attracted over 50 NEGC golfers.   Amrith and Dhanushi had a clear edge over the rest of the golfers to emerge overall Club Champions, scoring 137 over Men’s runner-up Sachin de Silva’s 155, and 262 over the Women’s category runner-up Jane Hong’s 268 respectively. Moreover, Amrith was the winner of the Men’s A Division Nett score with 139 nett, while Dhanushi also walked away with the Women’s Nearest to the Pin award. In addition to the Championship trophies, the winners walked away with the latest mobile devices in the market courtesy of Etisalat Lanka. Commenting on the support extended for the tournament by Etisalat Lanka, Chief Executive Officer/Director Dumindra Ratnayaka said, “It is our privilege to once again be a part of such a prestigious tournament as the NEGC Club Championships 2013. The talent on display during these three days was truly encouraging and a pleasure to observe, and we hope that our local players will also get the opportunity of showcasing their talents at an international level. As an organisation committed to nurturing the golfing fraternity in Sri Lanka, Etisalat is proud to not only support this tournament, but all four golf clubs in Sri Lanka.” Other Men’s winners included top Nett scorers in Divisions A, B and C, the Maters category for those between 55-65 years, the Seniors category for those over 65 years, as well as special prizes awarded for the Longest Drive and Nearest to the Pin. In addition to being the runner-up Men’s Club Champion and runner-up A Division Nett scorer, Sachin de Silva was a standout in this regard, walking away with both awards for the Longest Drive and Nearest to the Pin, as well as being adjudged the Men’s Winner of the Etisalat Elite Club category. The Women’s category was dominated by the Senadhira family, with Dhanushi’s mother Anusha scoring 236 Nett to emerge the winner of the Silver Division, as well as the Women’s Etisalat Elite Club category. Michele Mirchandani walked away with the honour of the Longest Drive among the ladies, as well as being the runner-up in the Silver Division. Further prizes were awarded to the winner and runner-up in the Ladies Bronze Division as well. Commenting on the successful conclusion of yet another Club Championship, NEGC President Capt. Nihal Keppetipola said, “The performances of our golfers during the 2013 NEGC Club Championships have indeed been very promising, and the success of the tournament is hugely dependent on these noteworthy displays of talent. I express my sincere gratitude to all the participants, with a special mention due to Etisalat Lanka, whose support of the tournament, and golf in general, is invaluable to the development of the sport in Sri Lanka.” During the event, Etisalat extended its Etisalat Elite Club loyalty scheme to the NEGC by hosting the quarterly draw at the club premises.
