10th Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7s 2014 organised by Past Prefects Association ends successfullyText and photos by M. Farook Lantra
Zahira College Colombo clinched the Super 16 Soccer 7s Championship after defeating St. Benedict’s College 1-0, in a pulsating match played under wet conditions on Saturday.
Both teams demonstrated an extraordinary measure of skill on both attack and defence. The only goal was booted by M. Shakeer of Zahira College in the game’s second half.

The competition was organised by the Past Prefects Association (PPA) of Zahira College and staged at the Zahira grounds on Saturday for the 10th consecutive year. This is an inter-school invitational seven-a-side football tournament approved by the Ministry of Education and endorsed by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association.
The tournament Advisory Committee consists of officials who are experts in the local and foreign arena. It is conducted annually with the objective of “Adding values to youth football in Sri Lanka”.
The Chief Guest at the competition’s opening ceremony was FFSL President Ranjith Rodrigo. Zahira College Principal Trizvi Marrikar was also present at the occasion.
Over 170 participants from 16 leading schools from the country took part in the grand finale for the 10th consecutive year. The tournament’s platinum sponsor was Pyramid Wilmer Ltd., gold sponsors was Li-Ning and silver sponsor was Amana Bank Ltd. Cool & Cool Asia Ltd. was the beverage partner, while the tournament’s healthcare partner was Hemas Hospitals, its printing partner was Print House, its finance partner was Aprico Finance and its recruitment partner was Banu Manpower.
All participating schools were presented with sports gear, first-aid kits, boxes and match bags from Hemas, Li-Ning and Northsore College.
The finals’ Chief Guest was Pyrmaid Wilmer Ltd. CEO O.H. Sulaiman.
The FIFA referees at the competition did a commendable job during the entire tournament despite the bad weather.
