Zahira College Colombo clinches Super 16 soccer “Peace Cup”

Zahira College Colombo emerged champions in the Super 16 soccer 7s “Peace Cup” beating arch rivals Al Aqsa College of Kinniya on Saturday in the 9th annual competition organised by the Past Prefects Association (PPA) of Zahira College, Colombo.
In a thrilling contest in front of capacity crowd, Zahira College Colombo clinched the trophy one goal to nil. Both teams played in a tight match, whilst for Al Aqsa, the tournament was a first time. The only goal at the finals came from M.F.N. Faroodh of Zahira College before lemons.
Over 170 participants from 16 leading schools from the country participated in the Peace Cup. Referees from the FIF did a commendable job during the entire tournament whilst the final was handled by K.L.S. Chathuranga of FIFA.
The PPA of Zahira College was inaugurated in October 2003 and as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, the annual soccer tournament was titled “I am Sri Lanka – Play for Peace Cup” to spread the message of unity via sports. Schools were drawn from the north, south, west and east.
At the opening ceremony, the Sri Lankan national flag, the I am Sri Lankan flag, the Zahira College and Sri Lanka Football Association flags were hoisted by Chief Guest Pyramid Wilmer Ltd. CEO O.H. Sulaiman, Dialog Axiata Senior General Manager Fariq Cader, Zahira College Principal T. Marrikar, FFCL City Football League Vice President R. Puhulendra and OIC Marana Police C.I. Sooriya Bandara.
The tournament’s Platinum Sponsor was Pyramid Wilmer Ltd., and Dialog Axiata PLC., was the Gold Sponsor. Amana Bank was the Silver Sponsor and Bronze Sponsor was Roxette T-shirts. Official Drink Sponsor was Cool and Cool Asia Ltd and other sponsors included Hemas Hospitals, Northshore College of Business and Technolgoy, Winfield Advertising, Veerasekari and Metro, renteverything.lk, the score.lk, and epola.
Roxette T Shirt Director M. Zahrain, Dialog Axiata Senior General Manager Shahey Faleel also graced the event.
