ZOBRA stages Zahira Mini Rugby Carnival

Text and Pix by Ruzaik Farook The Zahira Old Boys’ Rugby Association (ZOBRA) organised the ‘Zahira Mini Rugby Carnival 2014’ at the college grounds recently. St. Joseph College Colombo won the Championship, beating D.S. Senanayake College 5-0 in the Cup final while Ananda College beat Prince of College 10-7 in the Plate final. C.W.W. Kannangara Vidyalaya beat Wesley College 10-0 in the Bowl final and Shield champions Nalanda College beat St. Benedict College 7-0. Ananda College, D.S. Senanayake College, St. Joseph’s College, Mahanama College, Nalanda College, Royal-Panadura, St. Peters College, C.W.W. Kannagara, Wesley College, Zahira College, Thurston College, St. Benedict’s College and Prince of Wales College participated in the tournament. Best Player awards in the Under 10 age group went to Shehanda Umagiriyage of St. Joseph’s College, while Mohamed Shazni of Zahira College and Heshan Fernando of St. Joseph’s College won the same accolade in the Under 12 and Under 14 age groups respectively. Each of the winners received bicycles.  The Chief Guest at the event was Old Zahiran Sports Club Rugby Committee past Chairman and Sri Lanka Freedom Party Colombo District Organiser Fawzan Anver and the Guest of Honour was Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union General Secretary Nalin de Silva, both of whom distributed awards to the winners. The Principal of the Zahira College Trizvi Marikkar, Senior Vice Principal Ananda Ponnemperuma, vice principals Rukshan Razak and Mohamed Shazuli, ZOBRA President M.M.K. Namiz and members of the Board of Governors Rizvi Niyas, Hilal Sanoon, Alavi Mukthar along with Old boys were also present at the occasion.
