Background
It was on account of a visit from Mr. Johan Selin, advisor on export packaging at the International Trade Centre, Geneva, that the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP) came to be established in 1975. As you’re aware the ITC expert had expressed doubts whether the local packaging industry will be able to meet the advanced requirements of export packaging and mooted the idea of a national packaging institute.
What began with under 10 members nearly 50 years ago has now grown in numbers to 150 members.
SLIP is an association of both private and public sector enterprises representing all sectors of packaging in Sri Lanka, including, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, health and personal care products, industrial goods etc.
The primary objective of SLIP is to promote and develop the Sri Lankan packaging industry, and to function in this regard as the apex body representing the industry in interactions with the government and relevant ministries and regulatory bodies.
In 1986 SLIP was admitted as a member of the Asian Packaging Federation (APF) comprising all the National Packaging organizations in Asia and Oceania. We became members of the World Packaging Federation in 2002. Since then, Sri Lanka has held the positions of President of the APF and as Vice President of the World Packaging Federation.
In keeping with its objectives, SLIP conducts regular training programmes and workshops for the benefit of those engaged in the packaging industry as well as for those interested in packaging in the wider community. The Institute makes every effort to encourage the introduction of modern technology and developments to the local manufacturing operations.
Conducting Lanka Star Awards Contest for Excellence in Packaging was launched in 1987 first as a biennial event. As the contest gained popularity among the Sri Lankan Packaging Fraternity the Institute decided to make it an annual event from year 2000. A fair number of members of our Institute have repeatedly won both Asia Star and World Star contests conducted by the WPO and the APF respectively showing that the local packaging industry has developed and reached international standards during the past three decades.
SLIP introduced the Students Star category contest along with the Lanka Star contest from year 2003.in order to give recognition to students of Universities, technical institutes and other educational institutes who are involved in package designing as a part of their educational activities. During the last twelve years undergraduate students from the University of Moratuwa following a course in Package Design who received Lanka Star Student awards have won several World Star awards.
