German Deputy Ambassador Andreas Berg, together with the Ministry of Tourism Development, Wildlife, and Christian Religious Affairs Secretary S. Hettiarachchi, and GIZ Country Director Christiane Einfeldt visited Wilpattu National Park on 8 October to monitor the results of the first phase of the project ‘Supporting Wilpattu National Park and Influence Zone Management in Sri Lanka’.
During the visit, Secretary Hettiarachchi and Deputy Ambassador Andreas Berg highlighted the importance of the results achieved during the first phase, especially the approved management plan for the Wilpattu National Park and the modernisation of park buildings through the installation of solar panels and a water purification system. The Wilpattu National Park Management Plan (2019-2024) contains four programs: park operations, tourism development and visitor use, environmental, and outreach.
The delegation discussed the priorities for the Wilpattu National Park and the influence zone with Wilpattu National Park Warden Chamath Lakshman and high-ranking officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).
“Germany is very much looking forward to continuing our cooperation with the Government in the Wilpattu National Park and its influence zone,” stated Deputy Ambassador Berg.
The second project phase will be implemented from 2019 to 2022. It will combine the conservation efforts within the Wilpattu National Park with the sustainable development of its influence zone.
The Supporting Wilpattu National Park and Influence Zone Management in Sri Lanka project is implemented by the Department of Wildlife Conservation of the Ministry of Tourism Development, Wildlife, and Christian Religious Affairs and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
