A host of new initiatives to transform tourism being firmed up by a dedicated committee chaired by Kavan Ratnayake came up for review at a meeting chaired by President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday.

During the discussion, comprehensive short, medium and long term plans to enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal and comfort for tourists were thoroughly deliberated upon, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

Wickremesinghe had also urged officials to accelerate efforts towards the goal of attracting five million tourists annually.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando, Committee Chair Kavan Ratnayaka, Presidential Senior Adviser on National Security and Chief of Presidential Staff Sagala Ratnayaka, along with the chairpersons of Sri Lanka Tourism agencies and private sector representatives attended the meeting.

PMD said according to the recommendations set forth by the Committee tasked with establishing Sri Lanka as a leading tourist destination, the Ministry of Tourism and its affiliated bodies are formulating a strategic plan for up to 2025. Remarkably, 95% of this plan has already been completed.

With the aim of fostering a favourable investment climate, the President’s plan involves the establishment of an Investment Infrastructure Corporation, alongside the formation of a decision-making council. Emphasising the significance of Provincial Tourism Boards across all nine provinces, the President advocated for the creation of regional committees under each board.

Wickremesinghe also directed officials to identify a suitable location, in collaboration with the private sector, for the establishment of a high-class hotel school in Sri Lanka.

To enhance lodging options for tourists visiting Sri Lanka, the President issued additional directives. Officials have been tasked with investigating and compiling a report on currently unused buildings and historic bungalows. Additionally, they are to explore a program to unearth unexplored destinations and conceive new projects in tourist-centric areas.

PMD said during the discussion, Tourism Minister Fernando put forth a proposal to develop the Central Province as a sustainable tourism hub. He highlighted the untapped potential in the Central and Uva Provinces, particularly focusing on the pristine air quality.

Fernando also outlined several tourism promotion initiatives planned in preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Addressing congestion issues at airports and parks, he underscored the focus on enhancing visitor amenities.

The event saw key figures in attendance, including Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake, Tourism and Lands Ministry Secretary H.M.B.P. Herath, SLTDA Chairman Priantha Fernando, SLTPB Chairman Chalaka Gajabahu, SLCB Chairman Thisum Jayasuriya, SLITHM Chairman Shirantha Peiris, as well as private sector champions Hiran Cooray and Shiromal Cooray, along with heads of various State agencies.
