The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has announced plans to crackdown on fraudulent trades and overcharging tuk tuk drivers in popular tourist areas following numerous complaints and viral videos shared on social media.
“Officials would conduct regular raids and patrols in areas known for tourism-related businesses and street food vendors. Additionally, they would target tuk tuks that are reportedly overcharging tourists and local consumers,” CAA Director Raids and Special Investigations Sanjaya Irasinghe outlined the authority’s strategy to address the issue.
Irasinghe highlighted the detrimental impact of fraudulent practices on the country’s reputation and tourism industry, citing he had personally received multiple complaints from foreign visitors in countries such as Italy and France.
“Such activities deter tourists from visiting Sri Lanka, prompting them to seek alternative holiday destinations,” he pointed out, insisting on the urgency of addressing these issues to safeguard the integrity of Sri Lanka’s
tourism sector.
Accordingly, areas slated for special attention include Galle Face Green, Hulftsdorp (Aluth Kade), Kalutara, Hikkaduwa and Ella where fraudulent activities have been reported.
Irasinghe issued a stern warning to vendors and tuktTuk drivers engaged in deceitful practices, stating that the Authority would take decisive action against those found guilty of exploiting tourists and consumers.
“The Authority is poised to enforce regulations rigorously to uphold consumer rights and maintain the country’s reputation as a safe and reputable tourist destination,” he added.
Recently a man was arrested for selling to a foreigner a cup of tea and a ‘vadai’ for Rs. 800 in Moragalla, Kalutara while in the other incident, a street vendor at Hulftsdorp was arrested for harassing and attempting to sell a ‘kottu roti’ for Rs. 1,900 to a foreign national.
