President Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for a groundbreaking shift in the economic development strategy, urging provinces to actively utilise the powers granted by the 13th Amendment.
In a recent address at a dinner gathering with professionals in Jaffna, the President stressed the need for devolution to extend beyond mere political rhetoric, transforming into a tangible economic reality.
Highlighting the potential within the 13th Amendment, Wickremesinghe assured the Provinces the Government’s commitment to non-intervention in local affairs.
He drew inspiration from global examples, citing nations like Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom and France, where thriving regional economies coexist within a unified State structure.
The President also highlighted the imperative to break away from the current financial dependency on the Western Province, advocating for a decentralised approach.
He proposed the establishment of unique local and regional economies, capitalising on the distinctive strengths of each province, ranging from agriculture to tourism.
Wickremesinghe outlined three key pillars for economic growth: renewable energy, modernised agriculture and tourism. The Northern Province, in particular, was identified as a hub for renewable energy, with abundant potential in wind and solar power. Plans for modernising agriculture on a global scale and promoting tourism through initiatives like cruise tourism and themed trails were also unveiled.
Education emerged as a focal point in the President’s vision, with the Northern Province slated to become an educational hub. The Government pledged significant investments in technological research, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation, aiming to position Sri Lanka as a digital economy by 2025.
Wickremesinghe called for collaborative efforts among civil society, businesses, and Members of Parliament in the Northern Province.
He emphasised the Government’s dedication to boosting an environment conducive to innovation, investment and economic prosperity, aiming to enhance job opportunities and propel national growth.
Meanwhile, young Kilmisha Udayasheelan, the winner of the ‘Little Champs 2023’ reality competition organised by the Zee Tamil channel in Tamil Nadu, India, had the opportunity to meet with President Wickremesinghe alongside her family members.
Hailing from Jaffna, the 14-year-old Kilmisha made history as the first Sri Lankan girl to triumph in an Indian reality competition.
Recognising the acclaim she has brought to the country, the President extended his congratulations and expressed best wishes for her future education and musical career.
As a demonstration of her talent, Kilmisha performed a song for the President.
Minister Douglas Devananda, MPs Wajira Abeywardena, Angajan Ramanathan, Northern Province Governor P. S. M. Charles and Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake attended the dinner gathering.
