Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam last Friday expressed optimism about reaching previously ‘unreachable targets’ by 2029, whilst celebrating the sector’s resilience and significant recovery.

Speaking at the National Tourism Awards 2024, which shone a spotlight on the sector’s best contributors, he opined that the ongoing season is expected to be the strongest since 2018.

“The industry is poised to end 2024 on a high note with visitor numbers expected to hit 2.1 million and revenue surpassing $ 3 billion. Hotel occupancy rates are climbing back to 80% and we are seeing a level of vibrancy that was absent for almost five years,” he said.

He said the best years are ahead and the ongoing winter season marks the start of a new chapter for Sri Lanka Tourism.

He further outlined a structured five-year approach to elevate the tourism sector, with a need for institutional reforms and innovative strategies.

“Our vision is bold, but achievable. The barriers holding back this industry will be broken with a doable attitude,” he asserted, adding that tourism’s contribution to the national economy, currently at 11%, could grow to 15%-20% with the right policies and collective dedication.

“Everyone in Sri Lanka has a part to play in tourism. All of you make this possible,” he said, calling for continued collaboration to sustain the sector’s growth trajectory.

Commending the industry stakeholders and individuals for their unwavering commitment, he underscored the importance of encouraging a skilled workforce to meet growing demand.

“Tourism’s recovery is not just about numbers. It is about livelihoods and creating opportunities across the country,” he added.

He reiterated the need to boost activities in Colombo around the city hotels, as it remains a key attraction for visitors, whilst stressing the importance of promoting lesser-known destinations to ensure equitable growth across the country.
