Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath last Friday called for collective optimism and determination to shape a thriving and sustainable tourism industry that showcases the unparalleled beauty and hospitality of Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the 7th edition of the National Tourism Awards 2024 organised by Sri Lanka Tourism after a five-year hiatus, he hailed the resilience, innovation, and dedication of industry champions in driving the sector’s remarkable recovery and growth.

“This evening, we honour the exceptional contributions of individuals and organisations who have propelled our tourism industry to new heights,” Herath remarked.

Acknowledging the role of creativity, quality service, and innovation in revitalising Sri Lanka’s standing as a premier travel destination, the Minister stressed the need for unified action to improve the sector, turning challenges into opportunities for long-term growth and global recognition.

Reflecting on the past year’s challenges, Herath praised the industry’s ability to withstand and recover from global and domestic pressures. “Despite facing unprecedented obstacles, your efforts have not only sustained the industry but reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s position as a world-class destination,” he added.

The Minister credited the collaboration between public and private stakeholders for creating a resilient and inclusive tourism ecosystem.

“Through shared marketing strategies and engagement, we have fostered a model that prioritises cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development,” he noted.

The Minister also celebrated the country’s growing recognition on the global tourism stage, with partnerships and certifications boosting Sri Lanka’s credibility.

Special acknowledgement was given to the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) CEO Noor Ahmad, whose presence underscored international appreciation. “Such collaborations are important for us to adopt global best practices to boost our standards,” he added.

The Tourism Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the sector, citing investments in infrastructure and human resource development as key pillars of its strategy.

Herath encouraged the audience to draw inspiration from the night’s success stories as it celebrated the brightest stars of the industry.

Tourism Deputy Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe also acknowledged the remarkable contributions of tourism industry stakeholders in elevating the country’s global appeal as a premier destination.

“Your unwavering commitment to excellence has not only strengthened the tourism sector but also enriched the millions of visitor experiences, showcasing the best of Sri Lanka to the world,” he said, lauding the industry for driving transformation through innovation, whilst upholding the values of sustainability and inclusivity.

He highlighted the Government’s recognition as a cornerstone of both economy and society.

The Deputy Minister asserted the importance of sustainability and inclusivity in tourism, highlighting the sector’s role in fostering economic growth and cultural preservation.

“It is imperative that we protect our environment, preserve our cultural essence, and ensure that the benefits of tourism are equitably shared across all communities,” he stated.

Calling for a long-term vision, Ranasinghe urged the sector to focus on leaving a positive legacy for future generations. “Responsible tourism is not just a duty, but an opportunity to create lasting impacts that uplift communities and preserve our heritage,” he said.

The Deputy Minister also stressed on the importance of collaboration among the public and private sectors to ensure continued growth in the industry. “Your perseverance and vision are the driving forces behind Sri Lanka’s growth as a global destination for innovation, sustainability, and exceptional experiences,” he emphasised.
