458 hotels comprising 82,476 rooms opened in Asia Pacific in 2012

According to data from STR Global, the Asia Pacific hotel industry opened 458 new hotels with 82,476 rooms in 2012.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment opened the most new rooms with 17,050 rooms in 79 hotels, followed by the Upper Upscale segment (45 hotels with 15,463 rooms) and the Economy segment (156 hotels with 14,194 rooms). The Midscale segment (33 hotels with 7,253 rooms) and the Upper Midscale segment (34 hotels with 7,031 rooms) added the fewest number of new rooms.



The Asia Pacific hotel development pipeline comprises 1,767 hotels totalling 385,113 rooms, according to the December 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.

 



Caribbean/Mexico

The Caribbean/Mexico region added 19 new hotels comprising 2,670 rooms in 2012.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment added the most rooms in 2012 with 7 hotels and 970 rooms, followed by the Upper Midscale segment (4 hotels with 483 rooms) and the Luxury segment (3 hotels with 447 rooms). The economy segment added zero rooms in 2012.

The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 120 hotels totalling 18,457 rooms, according to the December 2012 STR Construction Pipeline Report.

 



Central/South America

The Central/South America region added 47 new hotels with 6,121 rooms in 2012.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment added the most new rooms in 2012 with 11 hotels and 2,017 rooms. Four other segments reported more than 500 new rooms in 2012: the Upper Upscale segment (three hotels with 1,849 rooms); the Upper Midscale segment (seven properties with 907 rooms); the Midscale segment (17 hotels with 601 rooms); and the Independent segment (seven hotels with 539 rooms).

The Central/South American hotel development pipeline comprises 232 hotels totalling 35,686 rooms, according to the December 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.

 



Europe

The European hotel industry opened 332 new hotels with 41,982 rooms in 2012.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the Economy segment opened the most new rooms with 11,064 rooms in 95 properties. Three other segments opened more than 5,000 new rooms in 2012: the Upper Midscale segment (67 hotels with 8,869 rooms); the Upscale segment (39 hotels with 6,137 rooms); and the Midscale segment (52 hotels with 5,537 rooms). The Luxury segment added the smallest number of new rooms in 2012 with 2,276 rooms in 14 hotels.

The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises 844 hotels totalling 141,273 rooms, according to the December 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.

 



Middle East/Africa

The Middle East/Africa hotel industry opened 68 new hotels with 15,735 rooms in 2012.

The Upper Upscale segment added the most new rooms in 2012 with 3,600 rooms in 10 properties, followed by the Luxury segment (11 hotels with 3,508 rooms) and the Upscale segment (16 hotels with 3,467 rooms). The Midscale segment reported the largest increase of new rooms added in 2012 compared with new rooms added in 2011, rising 79.5% with 10 hotels and 1,431 rooms. The Economy segment reported the smallest number of new rooms in 2012 with 242 rooms in two properties.

The Middle East/Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 478 hotels totalling 119,233 rooms, according to the December 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.
