Long known for their commitment towards the environment, Jetwing Hotels achieved another milestone by being awarded ISO14001 certification for six of their properties in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI), awarded the certificates in a ceremony held at Jetwing Sea, Negombo on 03 May. The certifications were awarded to Jetwing Blue, recently rated as a five-star resort, Jetwing St. Andrew’s, Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions, Jetwing Lighthouse, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Jetwing Sea; now a four-star rated resort and Jetwing Vil Uyana, another member of SLH; all of which join Jetwing Beach, which was certified ISO14001 in 2011.

The International Organisation for Standardisation has a membership of 163 countries, and with a portfolio of more than 19000 standard certifications, provides practical tools for all three dimensions of sustainable development; economic, environmental, and societal.

The ISO standards provide a model to follow when setting up and operating a management system. These standards are formulated as a result of international, expert consensus which provides a number of benefits, such as efficient use of resources, improved risk management, amongst others.

The ISO 14001 certification addresses various aspects of environmental management, an aspect Jetwing promotes heavily through a dedicated initiative called the Jetwing ‘Eternal Earth’ programme. In addition to Community Outreach and Humanitarian Programmes, all Jetwing hotels are designed to be as sustainable as possible with energy and resources used sparingly.

Through earth saving practices such as dependence on renewable energy in the form of solar power, energy efficient lighting, and recycling waste, Jetwing has constantly been in the forefront of green practices.

ISO14001:2004 specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organisation to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal and other requirements to which the organisation subscribes, and information about significant environmental aspects.

It applies to environmental aspects that the organisation identifies as those which it can control and those which it can influence.

“With Jetwing Blue, Jetwing Sea, Jetwing St. Andrew’s, Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions, Jetwing Lighthouse and Jetwing Vil Uyana being awarded ISO14001, we have achieved quite a milestone indeed. Seven of our 16 properties are now certified, and it is a great honour to have our efforts recognised according to international standards,” said Jetwing Hotels Chairman Hiran Cooray. “Our engineering and hotel teams constantly work hard to live up to our reputation for being a company that is green, and we thank them for their efforts as we can only go further from here”, he added. Family owned and in the tourism industry for the past 40 years, Jetwing Hotels has surpassed expectations at every aspect. Building on their foundation of being passionate, as well as the experience of true, traditional Sri Lankan hospitality, constantly pioneering discoveries capture the essence of the brand.

Such a strong statement and direction have enabled Jetwing Hotels to imagine, create and manage marvels and masterpieces, where distinctive design and elegant comfort complement each other and the environment. Considered a priority; sustainable and responsible practice is implemented through the award winning Jetwing ‘Eternal Earth’ programme; with energy efficiency, community upliftment, and education on earth-saving measures for schoolchildren being one of the tenets of the programme.
