Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., (AASL) has unveiled plans for a significant upgrade to the departure baggage makeup facility at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), with a project valued at Rs. 852 million awarded to MSN Engineering Ltd., a leading baggage service provider in Sri Lanka.
Highlighting the importance of the project, AASL Chairman Eng. Athula Galketiya said: “This project will enhance the departure baggage handling capacity at BIA by around 45%. It includes the construction of new buildings dedicated to departing passengers, check-in counters and satellite boarding gates, extension of the departure baggage makeup carousel, along with associated civil works.”
Scheduled to be completed within nine months, this comprehensive upgrade is expected to streamline baggage handling processes, reduce wait times and ensure smoother departures for travellers passing through BIA. The investment underscores the airport’s commitment to maintaining world-class standards and meeting the evolving needs of passengers in an increasingly dynamic aviation landscape.
The agreement for the project was formally signed on 26 April 2024 at BIA, with AASL Chairman Eng. Athula Galketiya, AASL Vice Chairperson Awanthi Senaratne, AASL Head of Projects Eng. Asitha Karunaratne and senior officials of AASL in attendance. Representing MSN Engineering Ltd., Directors Kanthalingam Shivaskaran, Nalin Bandara, Menaka Aberathna, and other officers were also present at the signing ceremony.
The project aligns with AASL’s ongoing commitment to continuously enhance infrastructural facilities at BIA, the country’s primary gateway, to accommodate the increasing passenger volume efficiently.
The upgraded departure baggage makeup facility is poised to play a key role in further elevating the airport’s reputation for excellence in service delivery and contributing to the overall growth and development of Sri Lanka’s aviation sector. With this enhancement, BIA will be better equipped to manage the growing demands of air travel and maintain high standards of service excellence.
