Browns Hotels & Resorts (BHR), the hospitality arm of local conglomerate Browns Group, recently commemorated World Tourism Day with several activities cross the Group including a tourism walk under the theme ‘Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all’.

The walk, which began at the Group’s Beruwala resort Eden, covered the Bentota-Beruwala area with the specific objective of educating people about the social, economic and cultural values of the industry. It also highlighted the significant benefits of tourism for the local community, while encouraging the youth to join one of the main foreign exchange earners for the country.

Over 60 members from the Eden hotel staff along with 10 guests made the walk clad in specially designed T-shirts and caps. The hotel also took the opportunity to promote its sustainability and CSR initiatives – a very crucial factor given the present-day context of environmental conditions. Other activities carried out by BHR included a beach clean-up involving schoolchildren from the area to create awareness and the planting of trees.

Commenting on the Tourism Day celebrations, Browns Hotels and Resorts Group General Manager Eksath Wijeratne said: “Tourism plays a vital role in our nation’s economy and it is important that the next generation understands its place in our country’s future as well as their own. We are certain that campaigns like this will greatly contribute to the promotion and development of the industry in the region and will also be successful in achieving the main objective of opening more avenues for jobseekers in the field of tourism.”

As a part of BHR’s sustainability initiatives, it also focuses on many activities to secure the environment. BHR has significantly reduced the use of plastic and polythene in its operations. These activities have garnered BHR several prestigious awards over the years. Some significant awards received by the Group recently are the Sustainable Tourism Award 2019 awarded by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and the National Green Award 2018 awarded by the Central Environmental Authority.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observances on 27 September since its inception in 1980, on which date in 1970 the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.

The Eden Resort & Spa in Beruwala is located along the pristine and world renowned golden mile beach. Offering the most extravagant 5 star comforts and surrounded by the charm of a tiny fishing village, Eden provides plenty to see and do in the vicinity.

Browns Hotels & Resorts is a subsidiary of the Browns Group one of Sri Lanka’s largest diversified conglomerates which manages a fast growing and valuable portfolio of brands across several key industry sectors, such as power generation; home and office solutions; agriculture and plantation support services; pharmaceuticals; investments; marine and manufacturing; and healthcare.
