The Sustainable Tourism Unit (STU) of the University of Colombo on 28 October will celebrate the World Tourism Day 2024 with a focus on promoting “Tourism and Peace for Sustainable Prosperity”.
The event at the FGS Auditorium of the University of Colombo is organised by the STU in collaboration with the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts.
The celebration aligns with the UN World Tourism Day 2024 theme of “Tourism and Peace”.
The event promises to highlight Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable tourism and its potential as a leading destination focusing on cultural diversity, peace, prosperity and inclusion.
The event will also feature a series of activities including, a diplomatic dialogue forum, HR forum, tour itinerary competition and also video competition focusing on the UN World tourism theme: Tourism, Peace and Human resource challenges of Sri Lanka Tourism followed by cultural and food diversity presentation.
“These activities are designed to promote and position Sri Lanka as a leader in sustainable tourism, whilst looking towards a prosperous, equitable future for the country’s tourism industry,” University of Colombo STU Coordinator Prof. D. A. C. Suranga Silva said.
The diplomatic dialogue aims to gather insights from experts on how tourism can be used as a tool for encouraging inclusivity and sustainable economic growth. The dialogue will also explore case studies and lessons from both Sri Lanka and the global context.
Sri Lanka Tourism HR Forum focuses on empowerment of people for sustainable tourism development, a key factor in promoting long term growth and job creation in the industry.
Tour itinerary competition and video competition encourages creativity and innovation in showcasing the country’s wide range of unique offerings from culture, wildlife, heritage, cuisine, wellness and sustainable tourism practices.
The presentation of Sri Lankan cultural and food diversity under the theme “Together for Diversity” will showcase the island nation’s rich heritage and culinary offerings, fostering unity through cultural exchanges.
