Iranian tourists view Sri Lanka as new destination

Iranian Tourism Agencies and Air Transport Association Executive Vice President Dr. Mortenza Shabani visited Sri Lanka on the initiative of Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Iran N.M. Shaheed.

During the visit, the delegation was welcomed by the Chamber of Tourism Industry President A.M. Jaufer and Tourism Promotion Bureau officially at the airport. 

A meeting was held last Friday between the Sri Lanka Tourism Authority and Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam, and Iranian Tourism Agencies and Air Transport Association Vice President Dr. Mortenza Shabani. The discussion focused on promoting tourism between Iran and Sri Lanka.

Dr. Shabani expressed interest in positioning Sri Lanka as a new tourism destination for Iranian travellers and stated that they are ready to promote the country among Iranian tourists. He also extended an invitation to the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau to participate in a trade fair scheduled for February 2025.

During the meeting, the President of the Chamber of Tourism Industry proposed hosting the Iranian Travel Agency Annual Conference in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Convention Bureau Manager of Marketing Malkanthi Welilaka was also present at the discussion.

Dr. Mortenza Shabani has indicated Sri Lanka as the best holiday destination for Iranian tourists. “We are ready to work with Sri Lanka Tourism to Promote Iranian Tourist to Sri Lanka,” he said.

They met with the Financial Ministry Secretary and Treasury Secretary, Mahinda Siriwardana, regarding the current situation of the country. Moreover, they had discussions with Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) Director General Renuka Weerakoon, about investment opportunities and the potential investment climate. During these meetings, Investment Promotion Executive Director Prasanjith Wijayathilake also participated.
