Khiri Travel is organising a community recyclable garbage takeaway program in Colombo district on 17 May from 4 p.m. The public is welcome to join.
The event is part of International Recycling Day, established by UNESCO. The effort is also in honour of Khiri Travel’s 25th anniversary.
Gili Back, the Khiri Travel Sustainability Manager and Executive Director of Khiri Reach says: “On 17 May every year, International Recycling Day is celebrated, although it is something that we should participate in every day. How? By being consistent, treating waste effectively, protecting the environment and fighting climate change.”
In order to help achieve this, Khiri Travel will be hosting special events, educational seminars and clean ups in seven countries across Asia.
The one in Colombo is titled “Clean Up In Your Hood” will kick off from Khiri Travel – No. 34 A, Shrubbery Gardens, Colombo 04.
Celebrate International Recycling Day by showing how you can be part of the change needed to keep your country clean and beautiful. Khiri Travel Sri Lanka says that each one of us as individuals can make a big difference. It’s easy if you start in the local neighbourhood where you live or work. It’s time to really start implementing “the 7 Rs”.
Khiri Travel Sri Lanka is active in promoting and practicing clean-ups and recycling following the successful beach cleanup that was hosted in honour of International Earth Day 2018. The whole team feels motivated to continue with the important and good work, and is proudly hosting another event to celebrate ‘International Recycling Day’ on 17 May that will commence at 4pm.
Khiri Travel understands that the greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it. Little do we know that change will come through no one but ourselves. Maybe at first we won’t make much of an impact on a large scale, but through small steps and involving others we will build a wave of change.
Khiri Travel Sri Lanka aims to start by collecting all the plastic, paper, glass, metal and electronic waste at our Colombo office and the neighbourhood we work in. All the neighbours have been informed and invited to join in advance of the event. Khiri will help educate them and ensure they are aware of what needs to be done. At the time of the event, they can hand over their own collected waste at the distribution point; this will be collected by Khiri partners at Cleantech by Abans for responsible recycling. With more local cooperation, this can then be done on a regular basis and hopefully spread to other neighbouring areas.
