Participants of ‘Raid Amazones’ arrive for world’s largest ‘all female adventure challenge’

• The first sports team to arrive in the island for the largest sports tourism event after the COVID-19 pandemic

Around 253 French women athletes and officials arrived on Monday at the Bandaranaike International Airport in the early hours of the morning from Paris, France, via flight number UL 564, to participate in the largest sports tourism activity in the island after the COVID-19 pandemic. 

They will be participating in the largest women’s adventure challenge tournament which is ‘Raid Amazones’ renowned all over the world for its variety. The event will take place using the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress as the backdrop. 

They were given a warm welcome by the officials of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Airport and Aviation Services, and SriLankan Airlines. The guests were also given souvenirs by the SLTPB officials in order to mark their arrival in Sri Lanka. 

Raid Amazones is a popular annual adventure trail which originates from France, and the participants will involve themselves in a wide range of adventure activities, including mountain biking, canoeing, riding, running, and archery using the exotic tourist destination as a backdrop. The SLTPB officials who welcomed the Raid Amazone participants included SLTPB Managing Director Padma Siriwardene, and other officials, also including the staff of the SLTPB Tourism Information Centre, BIA. 

All necessary steps have been taken to hold the iconic Raid Amazones event, which will be held under two sessions in Sri Lanka. Around 600 participants will be joining this tournament and the first leg of the tour will start from 16-22 March, while the second leg will be held from 28 March to 6 April. The event will take place covering areas such as Sigiriya, Kavudulla, Medirigiriya, Wewala, Kandalama and Mahawilgamuwa. 

This time, Raid Amazones will be holding its 20th sporting event up to date, as SriLankan Airlines emerges as the official airline partner, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.
