The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the Tertiary and Vocation Education Council (TVEC) to promote National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) among SLITHM students.
Under this arrangement, SLITHM students completing Craft Level programs covering front office operations, housekeeping, cookery, restaurant and bar service will be eligible to receive NVQ Level 1V qualifications.
This is a milestone for SLITHM after decades of issuing its own qualifications since it now has the opportunity to align with national qualifications and provide dual certification to SLITHM students, SLITHM Chairman Dilip de Silva said.
“The Sri Lanka National Vocational Qualification System from Levels 1 to 7 is rapidly gaining recognition among youth and employers, from year 13 schooling students (or even below) up to degree level at the University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC) in many areas of vocational education. It is encouraging that this arrangement has opened in the hospitality trade which has great potential in the tourist industry of the country,” said TVEC Chairman Professor Dayantha Wijeyesekera.
“We hope to work very closely with TVEC, VTA and NAITA to ensure national guidelines for NVQ certifications are adhered to and provide SLITHM students with a pathway to achieve NVQ Level 7 one day under the University of Vocational Technology,” the SLITHM Chairman said.
Under the guidelines of the LoI signed the SLITHM faculty will work closely with TVEC registered Industry Assessors to ensure NVQ assessment guidelines are followed to ensure quality standards are maintained throughout the satellite schools of SLITHM.
