SLITHM talent shine at World Food Competition with major wins

Sri Lanka’s culinary excellence took centre stage at the World Food Competition in India, where students from the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) secured top honours across three main categories.

The event organised by the Guru Nanak Institute of Hotel Management in Kolkata from 24-27 February, saw participation from 22 countries, including South Africa, Russia and Indonesia, with each nation showcasing its talent in the field.

Sri Lanka’s success was marked by outstanding performances in cake icing, fruit carving and mixology.

Rashmi Randika claimed the top price in the cake icing competition, while Upeka Ekanayake secured the first runner-up in fruit carving competition, and Chandula Ilesinghe added to the accolades by finishing as the second runner-up in the mixology category. Anuradha Prasadi represented Sri Lanka in the highly competitive chef’s competition, further solidifying the country’s presence in the international culinary arena.

Upon their return, the Tourism Ministry together with SLITHM hosted a special ceremony to celebrate the students’ achievements, with Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, SLITHM Chairman Dheera Hettiarachchi, Ministry officials and fellow students in attendance.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister highlighted the significance of this triumph, stating that it not only elevated Sri Lanka’s reputation in the global culinary landscape but also showcased the potential of Sri Lankan cuisine to a wider audience.

He hailed the victory as a milestone for Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector, reinforcing the country’s status as a destination rich in culture, tradition and culinary artistry.
