Sri Lanka is gearing up for a major tourism boost from the ‘Ashara Mubaraka’, spiritual convention drawing over 30,000 religious visitors from around 40 countries in July.

The global convention will be held at the Dawoodi Bohra Masjid in Marine Drive, Colombo 4.

“Planning for the Bohra spiritual leader’s visit in July. Over 30,000 expected to visit Sri Lanka for 12 days,” Tourism Minister said.

Sri Lanka last played host to Ashara Mubaraka in 2019, soon after Easter Sunday attacks to boost the image of the country as a safe destination.

His holiness Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, along with thousands of devout Muslims from around the world, gather every year in a 10-day long period that sees the community mourn the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, Imam Hussain.

This convention holds particular significance as it demonstrates the country’s cultural diversity and openness to welcoming visitors from around the world.

It is the first major international convention the country is hosting in for 2024 and was initiated by the Tourism Ministry as well as the Bohra community in the country.

Sri Lanka Tourism anticipates that the event will not only foster cultural exchange and spiritual enrichment but also provide a significant boost to its tourism sector, contributing to its economy.

In March, Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin Saheb called on President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the official residence of the President on Paget Road.
