A fruitful discussion between the UNDP Resident Representative for Sri Lanka Azusa Kubota and Tourism Minister Harin Fernando was held yesterday, focusing on the vital role of UNDP’s contributions in developing Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
The meeting also delved into the implementation of “Sustainable Tourism Promotion” programs in anticipation of World Tourism Day, which falls on 27 September.
During the meeting, both parties highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism practices for the country’s economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation.
Kubota emphasised UNDP’s commitment to assisting Sri Lanka in fostering a responsible and sustainable tourism sector that benefits local communities, whilst safeguarding natural resources and cultural heritage.
The UNDP has been actively involved in supporting Sri Lanka’s tourism industry by providing technical expertise, capacity building, and funding for various projects. These initiatives aim to enhance the overall competitiveness of the tourism sector while ensuring it remains environmentally friendly and socially inclusive.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman Priantha Fernando also participated in the discussion.
